Product Review: GoMaxGo Vegan Candy Bars

When I was a kid and would go trick or treating, my friends and I would always have our parents drive us up the hill and drop us off where the rich people lived because they gave out full candy bars instead of the bite-sized ones. Since tomorrow is Halloween, and there isn't much a vegan can feel good about handing to our youth, I suggest you go to your nearest Whole Foods, pick up a bunch of these bars, and do like the Yorba Linda ballers do and pass out the full size bars instead of some cheapy bite-sized junk.

I came across GoMaxGo vegan candy bars a couple months ago on Twitter, and was amazed that I had not seen and tried their products already. They proceeded to send me a few bars to review, and as soon as I got them in my hands I knew I was in for a treat. The GoMaxGo candy bars are 100% vegan and use rice milk chocolate in their concoctions, which I found to be a great change of pace since almost anything vegan and chocolate is dark chocolate. (Don't get me wrong, I love dark chocolate, but a little change is always nice.) Most of the GMG candy bars are made to resemble mainstream conventional candy bars, but they really blow those dirty little things out of the water.

The first candy bar I tried the night I received the promo package was the Buccaneer. This bar is the simplest of the batch, consisting of just chocolately nougat surrounded by creamy rice milk chocolate coating. One bite from this bar and I knew it wouldn't be the only one I ate that night. I'm going to go ahead and admit that I ate 3 of the 4 bars on the very first night I received them! But when I woke up the next day, I didn't feel gross and stuffed like you often do from overeating. I think this is a testament to the clean ingredients GoMaxGo uses in their tasty little morsels.

GoMaxGo Buccaneer BarNext bar up was the Mahalo. Since I'm not a gigantic fan of coconut, I wanted to get this one out of the way in case I wasn't really into it (following the old "save the best for last" mantra). I was pleasantly surpised by the combination of flavors in this bar that's more or less a vegan Almond Joy. The almonds, coconut and chocolate present a bevy of delicious goodness to your palette, and the difference in textures makes this bar very unique. Another A+ product.

GoMaxGo Mahalo BarAs soon as I read the descriptions of the different candy bars, I knew which would be my favorite: the Snickers-esque Jokerz bar. In this bar, roasted peanuts, caramel, peanut nougat and creamy chocolate converge to create a little slice of heaven on earth. I always loved caramel, and have missed it a bit since going vegan since it's usually very dairy-laden. This vegan caramel is rich and creamy like its non-vegan counterpart, and it is way too good. This was by far my favorite bar, mostly because it combines some of my favorite flavors. That was it for the night, I was not about to let myself consume 4 candy bars in a few hours.

GoMaxGo Jokerz BarThe next day, after a long day of work (if you see a theme arising related to my work schedule, yes, I am ALWAYS too busy), I decided I deserved to treat myself to the last bar that GoMaxGo had sent me: the Twilight bar. Again on the simpler side, but no less delicious, this bar is made up of chocolate nougat and rich caramel surrounded by rice milk chocolate. It was obvious that GoMaxGo was not going to disappoint me, so I don't feel the need to say too much about this bar other than that it was just as stellar as the rest.

GoMaxGo Twilight BarI would gladly recommend any of these bars to vegans and non-vegans alike, including chocoholics like myself. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't a vegan option for candy on the market that even gets close to rivaling these bars. Rumors have it that GMG is perfecting a peanut butter cup to hit the market soon, and once that happens there's a decent chance I won't be able to pay my rent since my vegan candy budget will go through the roof. My highest thanks, love and support goes out to the fine people at GoMaxGo, keep up the great work guys!
