Product Review: Nacho Mom's Vegan Queso

When I was in Texas a couple years ago, I found it extremely difficult to order anything without meat because servers at the restaurants just couldn't comprehend why anyone would order something that didn't include rotting flesh. I also found it somewhat strange that at many of the Mexican restaurants they served cheese dip with chips instead of salsa. When I found out that this cheese dip, known simply as "queso", usually also contained ground beef (sometimes referred to as "queso fundido"), I started getting ideas. Back then, Daiya wasn't around so a good melty vegan cheese seemed almost impossible, but I vowed to myself that if one ever came along I would make myself some vegan queso fundido.

Fast forward to November 2010. There are now plenty of good melty vegan cheeses on the market, and over Twitter I came across a company making nothing but vegan queso. Nacho Mom's Vegan Queso was kind enough to send me a jar to review, and I couldn't be more thankful. This stuff is AMAZING!

Since I had the goal of creating a queso fundido in my mind, I started off by throwing some Trader Joe's soyrizo on the griddle while the Nacho Mom's Vegan Queso slowly heated over a low flame on the stove. I like my ground beef substitutes browned a little before I throw them into any recipe so the griddle worked perfectly.

After the soyrizo had browned a bit on the griddle, I tossed it into the pre-heated pot of vegan queso that was sitting on the stove. I turned the heat up a bit and thoroughly mixed the soyrizo in with the queso until it was evenly spread out and the perfect texture. I chose to eat my queso fundido with some Trader Joe's baked organic blue corn tortilla chips which are delicious and less fattening than the fried version. This combination was SOOOOOO GOOD!!!

I would very highly recommend this product to vegans and non-vegans alike, I'm guessing omnivores wouldn't be able to tell it's vegan if their lives depended on it. Nacho Mom's Vegan Queso isn't available at Whole Foods yet but luckily for those of us in OC it will be arriving at Mother's sometime this month. Nacho Mom's Vegan Queso definitely receives the Double V stamp of approval... TWICE!

Look how pretty my label is with that faux chorizo's label. I think it's a marriage made in heaven...

...which means your blog is heavenly!

Or at least the recipe sure sounds like it!

Glad you love our baby queso...thanks for the review!

Susan,
Good news! My distributor, UNFI, picked up part of their order for other parts of the country on Tuesday and the order for the Texas warehouse is going out tomorrow morning! The Texas warehouse is the one Whole Foods in the SW orders from so...I am pretty sure that means I'll be in Whole Foods prior to the original January date we expected. I can't know for sure, but it would sure seem like it.... and we at Nacho Mom's are so excited to walk down the aisles of Whole Foods very soon and see our queso. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'll have to buy a jar just to experience the wow factor of that. So hang in there, because it'll be rollin' along the highway tomorrow. Comin atcha! They told us they'd stock it in January but I'm hoping this means it will go in sooner.

But, for those not near a retailer, we do have wonderful online stores who carry it so you never have to be without.... :-)

I'm buying the faux chorizo this weekend

Picked up Nacho Mom's Queso at Atkins in Springfield, MO. Slathered it on Huevos Racheros. Great stuff!
