Product Review: Lightlife Gimme Lean Sausage

As much as I hate to admit it, I really used to like breakfast sausage when I was a meat eater ten years ago. I know that's terribly gross if you know what goes into sausage, but let's face it, my diet was gross back then. When I became vegetarian, it pleased me to know that many of the faux meat companies made fake breakfast sausage. It displeased me, however, when I went vegan a year later to realize that most of these sausage-esque products contained eggs or egg whites. Luckily, Lightlife has a faux sausage product called Gimme Lean that does not contain any animal products, just pure tastiness that fits in perfectly to any breakfast.

The Lightlife Gimme Lean sausage is versatile and easy to use. I've used it as a topping on pizza, in pasta sauce, and when I eat breakfast at Mother's I have it added to my tofu scramble for extra protein, flavor and texture. When you open up the package, you find it to be sticky so it forms into patties quite nicely. This is the ideal way to use it for breakfast foods. Just pan fry the patty in a tiny amount of oil and voila, a perfect sausage side.

One of my absolute favorite ways to use the Lightlife Gimme Lean sausage is in a "mockmuffin" style breakfast sandwich. This is an incomplete version of a sandwich to be featured on the breakfast menu at the upcoming vegan sandwich spot Phoney Baloney's. I take a toasted, buttered (Earth Balance) organic English muffin, add a sausage patty, some pressed, flavored, and baked tofu "egg" and usually add some Daiya and possibly spinach. I didn't have the Daiya or spinach on hand for this time so that's why this is the incomplete version.

This sandwich is so delicious and perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It packs a protein punch with the sausage and tofu, and isn't too heavy since it uses the English muffin instead of a biscuit or regular bread. I highly recommend trying this at home or coming into Phoney Baloney's when it opens and trying the complete version without having to do any cooking yourself.

Thanks to Lightlife for hooking me up with the free grub and also for making a wonderful faux sausage product for us vegans to enjoy!

I used Gimme Lean sausage in sweet potato hash, which was one of the very first things I made as a vegan on my first vegan Christmas. It was delicious! I hate to admit that I liked sausage also, but I'm glad that when I want that sausage taste, I can grab something great like this!!!
