Product Review: Harmony Valley Vegetarian Breakfast Sausage Mix

If you saw my review of the Harmony Valley Vegetarian Hamburger Mix, then you know I'm a fan of their products. These easy-to-use mixes come dry for easy storage, and just need to be rehydrated before being formed into whatever shape you want them. I made classic veggie burgers with the burger mix, but this review is about the Harmony Valley Vegetarian Breakfast Sausage Mix.

While most people would probably cook these up and throw them in a tofu scramble or breakfast sandwich, if you're reading this blog you should know by now that I don't like to follow conventional ways of doing things. Rules are made to be broken, so when I was going to make pizza one night and an omnivore girl brought over Trader Joe's VEGETARIAN (containing egg whites, eww) Italian sausages when I had requested the Tofurky version, I decided to Italian-ize this sausage mix and use it to top my pizza instead.

Like the burger mix, the first step is to rehydrate with cold water and leave in the fridge for 15-20 minutes. From there the mix becomes sticky and moldable, and I worked into it garlic, rosemary, Italian breadcrumbs, parsley, chili powder, red pepper, a little marinara, sea salt and black pepper. This combination of seasonings transformed the mix from breakfast to peppery Italian sausage in an instant, proving further the versatility of Harmony Valley's products. I formed small patties with the mixture and started pan frying them in a little bit of olive oil. Once the patties started to brown I broke them up with a wooden spoon to make them small sausage chunks perfect for pizza, and let them brown a little more.

My pizza that night was made on Trader Joe's pizza crust and I decided to go sans Daiya and just load the pie up with plenty of veggies and a plethora of the Harmony Valley sausage. Paired with a simple, fresh salad and some really tasty Pinot made a great, delicious, filling meal that would rival any high end pizza place, right at home.
