Product Review: Sanuk Canvas Scurvy "Shoes"

One day I was browsing the vegan section of Zappos and noticed many of the shoes featured were made by Sanuk. I like to keep my finger on the pulse of the business world, so I had recently read a lot about how Sanuk, based here in OC, just became acquired by Deckers Outdoor (makers of the Simple brand of shoes). I decided to check out the Sanuk site and much to my excitement I found a plethora of vegan shoes and sandals. That being said, they are not entirely vegan, but they are nice enough to label all their vegan shoes/sandals quite clearly on their website.

Sanuk was also nice enough to send me a pair of "shoes" and a pair of sandals to review, and these are the Scurvy model "shoes". I put shoes in quotations because Sanuk wants to make it clear that "THESE ARE NOT SHOES (They're sandals)" as it reads on the tags. Sanuk boasts that these "shoes" have no stitchboard, no shank, they're just ridiculously comfortable. Let me tell you, this is the truth and nothing but the truth.

When I first unwrapped the package Sanuk sent me, I was pleased to see that both the Scurvy "shoes" and the sandals do not come in your regular cardboard shoebox, but rather in a corn-based, biodegradable drawstring bag. This bag is also adorned with a message asking you to re-use the bag or pass it on to someone who will.

The Sanuk hangtags are made from 100% recycled cardboard and tell the story of the surfer who started Sanuk, which means "fun and happiness" in Thai. Needless to say, Sanuk had pretty much won my approval before I even put on the shoes.

Then I slipped on the "shoes", and it was like little bits of heaven were surrounding my feet. I immediately understood why they call them sandals, they feel nothing like regular shoes. Your feet feel free and unburdened, while still being protected. They were light, comfy, and might I add, super swaggeriffic.

Boat shoes have been pretty hot for a while now, but it's rare to get footwear that is as absolutely comfortable as it is stylish, especially all wrapped up in a perfect vegan black canvas exterior. As I walked down the streets of North Park to meet my friends from EatPastry at Bar Pink, I felt like a billion dollars in freshly minted ones, all thanks to the fine folks at Sanuk.

If you're looking for some incredibly comfortable "shoes" with summer swagger that are vegan and eco-friendly, the Scurvy by Sanuk has my highest recommendation. You can buy these, as well as sandals and other men's and women's vegan footwear online at the Sanuk site, so you don't even have to leave the house to find these gems.
